In October 2024, female drummers gathered from all over in Dallas, TX to film a documentary Beat Keepers: The Next Chapter, the sequel to the original documentary, Beat Keepers:Women with Rhythm. The sequel continues to celebrate the incredible women drummers who come together to create, connect and perform. The filming began at Rockstars of Tomorrow in Frisco (a woman owned business) and culminated at Drummathon X at Grandscape in The Colony. Drummathon is an annual event by Breast Cancer Can Stick It! Foundation Inc. founded by drummer and breast cancer survivor April Samuels. Many of DFW’s local drummers are included in the film – Aquarius Fletcher, Carol Dierking, Jeannine Cumming, April Samuels, & RoseMarie Babbitt.
This film is being considered for awards by many film festivals. The Monthly Film Festival says. “Beat Keepers: The Next Chapter is more than a celebration of drumming. It’s a testament to resilience and empowerment and how women drummers deservingly take their places in music history and film making. Beat Keepers: The Next Chapter has a universal appeal that should resonate with its audience long after the credits roll.”
Filmreviews.org says “The women that make up Beat Keepers come from various backgrounds, yet it doesn’t deter them. The time they come together is more than just classes and performing, it’s about sisterhood. Many of the women have a solid connection of being breast cancer survivors. This weekend is about lifting each other up and enjoying the company of their fellow drummers. They don’t judge the backgrounds of the women that come to take the course or perform in the Breast Cancer Can Stick It! Drummathon. They simply have fun and inspire music. They accept drummers that have been performing for a short time or their entire lives, the whole point is to lift each other up within their musical family. Everyone should have a community like these remarkable women.”
Christopher Long of Ink19.com says “The film was about much more than “mere” drumming — it was about PEOPLE — women telling their compelling personal stories and sharing the pursuit of their dreams and passions. The sequel reveals the tight-knit bond within the female drummer community — like-minded women who celebrate and encourage each other. Packed with live performance footage, behind-the-scenes interviews, and marquee-name contributors, the film serves as an inspirational beacon for all aspiring musicians and artists — women and men alike.
Each drummer’s testimony is unique, and at times, emotional. Some of these “women with rhythm” began playing at an early age, others got started much later in life, in their 40s, 50s, or even their 60s. For artists pursuing their dreams, particularly drum enthusiasts, this 43-minute short film will speak to you, loudly and passionately. A bona fide labor of love, Beat Keepers: The Next Chapter may not be a big-budget feature, however, its heartbeat is HUGE!”
