Musician’s Corner Feature – Brian “Hash Brown” Calway

Blues musician Brian “Hash Brown” Calway hails from the State of Connecticut, and moved to Texas in 1983. He has been playing blues music since 1973 and plays harmonica, guitar, and sings. He has his own band, however, he is often seen and heard sitting in with numerous other bands all over the state, the country and Europe.

He has appeared on 50 different recordings with other musicians and has released 5 of his own CD’s. The most recent is called Stop! Your Evil Ways. He has played with musicians whom many consider to be blues royalty, including ZuZu Bollin, Henry Qualls, Sam Meyers, Big Al Dupree, Robert Ealey, Ray Sharpe, Pine Top Perkins, Koko Taylor, Duke Robillard, Ernie Johnson,Uncle John Turner, Big Bill Morganfield, Kim Wilson, Big Charles Young, Mike Morgan, Chuck Rainey, Joe Jonas, Curley “Barefoot” Miller and many more.

In addition to playing, he also travels around the country to states like California and Mississippi teaching and holding week-long seminars and classes in guitar, bass and harmonica to share his music with others. He does this several times a year.

He is also well known for hosting several extremely long running and very popular Dallas blues jams at places like The Bone in Deep Ellum, and The Hole in the Wall in West Dallas. It is likely that the best known of his jams was his original one, which was held at Schooner’s Bar for many years. He is currently playing every Tuesday that he is in town at the Tuesday night jam at the Step Up Lounge in Dallas, TX.

The Dallas Observer has awarded Hash Brown “BEST BLUES MUSICIAN” twice over the years.
